OWEN Coyle's Clarets will make the trip to Sheffield Wednesday for the first game of the new season in a little under two months.
The Hillsborough date was unveiled with the release of the 2008-09 fixtures this morning.

The game will take place on Saturday, August 9th.

It will be followed by a midweek date at Bury in the first round of the Carling Cup.

And the first home game of the new season will take place on Saturday, August 16th, when Ipswich Town are the guests.

The Lancashire derby games against Blackpool and Preston at Turf Moor are both early in the season.

Blackpool visit on Tuesday, September 16th, and Preston are the guests on Saturday, September 27th.

The reverse fixtures are at Deepdale on Saturday, January 17th, and at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday, March 3rd.

The Boxing Day game is at home to Barnsley with the only other seasonal fixture at Doncaster on December 28th.

There is no New Year's Day fixture as it is on a Thursday and too close to the FA Cup third round weekend.

The only other Bank Holiday fixture is at Cardiff on Easter Monday and the season closes on May 3rd with a home game against Bristol City.
