BURNLEY College's Boys' Academy team have been crowned the best in the North West.
After winning their own league, and beating South Trafford, winners of the North West League 3 in a semi-final play-off, Burnley were drawn against Blackburn St Mary's for the title of North West Champions.

After conceding an early goal, Burnley recovered to go 3-1 up with 20 minutes to go, thanks to goals from Scott Gray, Josh Boyle and a penalty from Berat Mjekiqi.

Jake Leary then added a fourth, before two late Blackburn goals led to an anxious last 10 minutes.

However, Burnley held on, thanks to some outstanding reflex saves from Yiannis Flevaris, to win the title.

Coach Brad Pates, who along with Brian Taylor has now been asked to train the North West team, said: "The boys have beaten 30 teams in the process of being crowned champions, and their performances have been outstanding.

"They are a relatively young team, and we are looking forward to some of them helping us to replicate this success next season."

The Girls' Academy team also won their North West league, eventually losing their Championship play-off semi-final 1-0 to Holy Cross of Bury.

Burnley College's Academy teams are run in conjunction with Burnley Football Club, with players able to study any one of the wide range of courses available at the college, while training and being coached at Burnley Football Club.

This allows players to gain the skills necessary to progress into Higher Education or employment, while receiving coaching from UEFA qualified staff, and being eligible for trials for the British Colleges' team and the county side.

The boys' squad was: Yiannis Flevaris, Danny Warner, Matty Baron, Tom Mustoe, Josh Boyle, Nick Wilkinson, Scott Gray, Matty Booth, Jake Leary, Simon Westwell, Berat Mjekiqi, Nathan Smith, Adam Holt, Liam Skaife, Joshua Conner, Kingsley Ashworth, Luke Hobson and Darly Barker.

The girls' squad was: Sian Atkinson, Rebecca Brown, Pheobe Hindle, Chantal Lingard, Zoe Preston, Jade Howson, Chelsea Rinaldi, Jill Sharples, Samantha Murray and Danielle McKillop.
