Fight night raises roof

TURF Moor witnessed the biggest amateur boxing show seen in the town in recent memory on Friday night.
More than 700 fight fans fans watched Sandygate ABC's 13-bout, first home show of the season.
Before the event took place, a 10-bell minute's silence was observed impeccably in respect to fallen soldier, Paratrooper Private Jason Rawstron, 23, who attended the club and was friends with some of the fighters.
After that, a hot-bed of local talent was on display.
Reece Clark was first to represent the club.
He put in a respectable display against Osman Aslam from Gloves ABC in Bolton, pushing hard through the three rounds.
Clarke did not disappoint in his debut fight, but the long reach of the taller Aslam prevailed and gained him a points victory.
Tom Rooke gave the judges no option to score in his bout when the Park High School pupil stopped his Chorley ABC opponent Ashley Keane, when, after two standing eight counts, the referee called a halt to the barrage of a strong and forceful display.
Southpaw Aaron Horsfall's debut against John Cartwright from Gloves ABC saw the Sandygate fighter take the first round in a convincing style, but a lack of fitness saw the Bolton boxer take control of the second, with the official in the middle calling a halt in the latter end of the round.
Joe Knight fought Martin Doherty from Manchester's Ardwick Lads ABC, and boxed magnificently, winning all three rounds unanimously.
The Fisher-More pupil kept the pressure on his southpaw visitor from the start, dominating the centre of the ring and making good use of a quality jab and a most effective right hand, leaving all the judges in complete agreement of the the winning outcome for the recently returned Burnley boxer.
Next up from the Holmes Street club was another debutant, Sam Hayward, against the more experienced Alex McCloy from Blackpool Kingscote ABC.
Hayward took him the distance with a convincing display, with a solid left hand and some very accurate scoring hooks, but he just lost out on the judges' decision.
The large, loud crowd raised the roof for the next bout, which saw the home club's John Smith in a highly-competitive affair with Conner Cunningham of Kirkdale ABC.
The Liverpool fighter could not handle the big punching Smith, who forced a eight count with a solid right in the first round, followed by a aggressive onslaught which gave the man in the middle little choice but to give the visitor another eight count, which ended the contest.
It was a most impressive and sharp debut from Smith.
Lloyd Riding went the distance, just losing out on a points decision to Ben Atkinson of Long Lane ABC.
After the interval, what was left of the roof was about to be rocketed into space as the senior boxers took to the ring.
First up was Sandygate's Ben Brindle against a heavier and much-fancied Liverpudlian Simon Brown of Kirkham ABC.
Brindle boxed a very smart fight, picking at his bigger foe with top-notch jabs, keeping the centre well and making good use of some solid body punching and very accurate right hands.
This display left the judges no problems in the scoring, and also saw him named boxer-of-the-night.
A most welcome face returned to one of the oldest boxing clubs in Lancashire's fight night, after a two-year absence from the ring.
"Trawden Terminator" Shane Singleton marked his return with a boxing lesson against Scott Kendrick from Ardwick Lads ABC.
Singleton dominated very early, making good use of a cracking jab and some perfect left hooks, bringing a smile to his old trainer and club stalwart Bob Rosbotham, who was ringside.
The run of wins continued when the most emotional bout of the night saw Ian Studholme box Bacup's Adam Jackson of Pioneer ABC.
The Sandygate boxer did himself proud with a quality display, working very well on the inside and giving his opponent no room to retaliate in a great show of ring craft.
Former paratrooper Studholme dedicated his points win to his fallen friend and comrade.
The show also featured junior K. Leary (Pioneer ABC) lose on points to J. Stevenson (Long Lane ABC), and senior M. Ryan (Middleton ABC) win on points against Ian Michaels (Cleckheaton ABC).
The whole building pulsated for the main event, which saw Burnley's Andy Ellis enter the hall in a retro Clarets top against a hastily-matched and vastly more experienced fighter Ryan Fletcher of Blackpool Kingscote ABC.
Ellis took the fight at short notice as his original opponent pulled out, giving away over 10 fights in the process.
Ellis took Fletcher the distance, but the more travelled boxer was more comfortable, with most of the pressure on Ellis' shoulders, taking a majority decision.
The Burnley club would like to thank the coaches involved in a great night – Andy Howcroft, John Brindle, Nik Tucker, Sean Dwyer and Tony Eddison, Howard Metcalfe, as well as all the many volunteers who helped in the big event.
