England’s most successful Test bowler Jimmy Anderson has claimed a five-for in the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston.
The 32-year-old boasted figures of 5-22 in his 10-over spell when adding the scalps of David Warner, Adam Voges, Mitchell Marsh, Peter Nevill and Mitchell Johnson to the 406 victims that had gone before them.
The Australians, who levelled the series at Lord’s earlier in the month, were seven wickets down with less than 100 runs on the board after the tourists had won the toss and opted to bat.
Anderson made the breakthrough when Warner (2) went lbw with just seven runs accrued in total. Steven Smith (7) became the first of Steven Finn’s two victims when finding the hands of Alastair Cook to take the scores to 18-2 before Michael Clarke (10) exited at 34-3.
Voges (16) and Marsh (0) were extinguished via the combination of Anderson and Jos Buttler, taking the score to 82-5. Nevill (2) and Johnson (3) were then sent marching back to the hutch with Australia struggling on 94-7.
